Here is a quick and easy tip for getting more mileage out of your hard protein treatments.
Start with Clarified HairWhen the hair is coated with product residue and buildup, the protein conditioner simply won't work as well. A conditioner's ability to penetrate the hair shaft can be blocked by:
- Soap/detergent residue from shampoo
- Silicone buildup from conditioner and styling products
- Petroleum and/or mineral oil from moisturizers
- Mineral deposits from hard water
So, to allow for maximum pentration, start your protein treatments with a clarifying shampoo. It will remove buildup and residue and allow your conditioner to work it's magic. Clarifying first will also eliminate the "gummy" or "stiff" feeling you might be experiencing with these treatments.
Once a month, I do a hard protein treatment to keep my hair strong. My Monthly Protein regimen looks like this:
- Start with a clarifying shampoo - I use Keracare First Lather Shampoo or Kenra Chelating Shampoo (great for ladies who had hard water).
- Second shampoo with a moisturizing/detangling shampoo - I use Keracare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo.
- Apply a hard protein conditioner in sections and sit under a dryer for 20 minutes. Do not comb through. - I use Nexxus Emergencee Conditioner.
- Rinse and apply a moisturizing conditioner to soften the hair. Sit under a dryer for 20 minutes - I use Keracare Humecto Creme Conditioner or Mizani Moisturefuse Conditioner
- Style.
If I follow this method, my hair will be very strong yet soft and full of body. I hope this helps!! Addiitonal tips for better protien treatments, leave them in the comments below!
