Do you love washing and conditioning your hair but hate the time it takes to detangle?

Are you trying to stretch your relaxers but have trouble dealing with your new growth after four weeks?

Here are five quick and easy ways to reduce tangles on wash day!

1. Try a Pre-Shampoo Treatment

A good pre-shampoo treatment, or "pre-poo", will prevent the harsh detergents in your shampoo from stripping the hair, causing it to tangle.

Apply 1/2 cup of conditioner and/or tablespoon of your favorite oil to dry hair and cover with a hot wet towel and plastic cap. Let the treatment penetrate for an hour. Then, wash and condition the hair.

My favorite pre-shampoo treatment is a mixture of Vo5 Strawberries and Cream conditioner and Hot Six Oil. I apply it to dry, unwashed hair and cover with a hot wet dish towel and/or plastic cap.

This makes my hair super soft and easy to detangle even after I shampoo. It's cheap, easy and it works every time!

2. Use a Detangling Shampoo

A good detangling shampoo is designed to act as a shampoo and conditioner in one, keeping the hair tangle-free and moisturized as it cleanses.

Keracare Hydrating Detangling shampoo and Nairobi Hydrating Detangling shampoo are both excellent!

3. Wash the Hair in Sections

This is a great way to keep the hair tangle-free and ready to style after washing.

Before hopping into the shower, create four equal sections. Braid or bun each section and secure with a clip. Remove the clip and wash and condition one section in the shower. Then, use a wide tooth comb to detangle the section in the shower, using the force of water from your shower head to help the comb glide through the hair. Then, place the section back into the clip or re-braid. Move on to the next section until all sections are completed.

Hop out of the shower and unravel each section and style as usual. The hair will be silky smooth and easy to style.

4. Try Double Conditioning

This is a tip that has helped me stretch 12-14 weeks for years.

After shampooing in the shower, apply conditioner and finish lathering. Rinse, lightly towel dry and apply a second deep conditioner (can be the same one) and sit under a dryer.

This first conditioner will remove tangles. The second deep conditioner will condition the hair and remove any residual tangles. Finish with a cold water rinse for extra shine.

5. Steam Treatments

Steaming the hair helps reduce tangles and define newgrowth. This makes is perfect for ladies looking to stretch their hair and reduce breakage along the demarcation line (the area where your relaxed hair meets your natural hair).

If you don't have a steamer, apply your deep conditioner and cover with a plastic cap. Using a pin, poke a few holes in the cap. Cover with a hot wet towel and an additional cap. Sit under a dryer for 30 minutes. Rinse with cool water and style.

Your hair will be soft, silky and super easy to style!
